Be prepraed for some exertion as you will get to see Doi Inthanon from another perspective as the first day includes the trek along the Mae Klanf luang trail. On day 2 you will get to see elephants at one of the most ethicla elephant sanctuaries in the whole of northern Thailand, as well as seeing some of Chiang Rais main highlights.
Day 1 - Doi Inthanon National ParkAn early start will be required on day one if you want to catch the Saturday buffalo market at Sanpatong! we will depart Chiang Mai and if you are doing this tour on a Saturday we will make a stop at the weekly Sanpatong Buffalo Market. This is a once weekly market where buffaloes and a variety of other livestock are traded. Around this agricultural market a large local market springs up on this morning offering a whole host of local items and foodstuffs to the hungry market goers.
The tour will continue to Doi Inthanon National Park. You will first visit the spectacular Wachiritharn Waterfall and then onto the start of the Mae Klang Luang trail. This trail will get you well away from the main tourist route and allow you to see a very interesting cross section of this stunning national park. The trail will first follow a forested route down hill before the trail meets the river. You will spend some time following the river. The trail will pass Pa Dok Siew Waterfall where at the base if you want to cool off please feel free to take a dip in the cool waters. The trail will eventually open out into agricultural land which surrounds Mae Klang Luang Karen village. you will see coffee bushes and rice paddies. We will make a stop at a local coffee house where they roast, hand grind and prepare freshly brewed coffee form the hills surrounding the village.
It will then be time for lunch. Lunch will be take at a local Karen restaurant and then you will board the minibus to see some of the other popular sights Inthanon has to offer. You will see the two majestic king and queen pagodas at the top of the mountain and enjoy the views from this high vantage point. You will visit visit the highest part of Doi Inthanon which is also Thailand’s highest mountain and you will walk the Angkha Nature Trail (400m short walk) where you will see a unique variety of flora which only flourishes at this high altitude.
If you have not already seen enough waterfalls you can take the option to see Mae Ya which is Doi Inthanon’s biggest falls (However the part authorities does close this waterfall in the wet season months as a safety precaution against water surges after heavy rainfall)
Note: A good level of fitness will be required to complete the trek. The trek involves walking up and down steep paths and along jungle tracks. This trek will not be suitable for the elderly
Day 2 - Chiang Rai
On day two ou will be picked up early to embark on this special one day tour to Chiang Rai. We will depart the city of Chiang Mai and head north over the mountains to Chiang Rai. On route we will take an early morning coffee break at Mae Kha Jan Hot Springs to take a break from the driving. The driving will continue for a further while as we approach our first main stop of the day, Elephant Valley Chiang Rai. On arrival at Elephant Valley you will be handed over into the hands of the knowledgeable staff at this special elephant sanctuary where you will be informed about the lives of elephants in Thailand and about the elephants residing at this small sanctuary. This sanctuary offers exceptionally high elephant welfare standards and you will be able to observe and spend time with these splendid animals in a very natural habitat. After The elephant sanctuary we will visit the now very famous Wat Rong Khun (White Temple) before proceeding to Chiang Rai to take our lunch by the Kok River. After lunch we will head out of town to visit Wat Rong Sear Tean (Blue Temple) and then on to Baan Dam (Black House museum). This will be our final stop of the day unless you want to take the option to visit the Long Neck village where you will see this amazing ethnic Karen group from Burma. After the tour you will be transferred back to your Chiang Mai hotel (or we can drop off at a Chiang Rai hotel or at Chiang Rai airport)

From the beginning of 2015 a passport will be required if you want to take the Mekong boat trip to the Laos island of Don Xao (before a passport was not required) Please bring your passport if you want to do this option. Please also note that no exit or entry visas will be stamped in your passport and if you do cross onto the island of Don Xao your Thai visa will be unaffected.
On this tour we can arrange a short crossing into Burma from the Thai town of Mae Sai. On the Burmese side there is a bustling border market where you can spend 30-45 minutes. For the Crossing you will require your passport and a Burmese visa which is available at the Burmese immigration post and can be obtained on the day (current price is 500 baht/person). Please note that if you do cross into Burma your current Thai visa will be cancelled. On crossing back to Thailand you will be stamped with a 15 day visa only. Please ensure that 15 days is enough to cover the rest of your holiday plans in Thailand.
A Tourist Authority of Thailand licensed and English speaking guide will be provided. Other languages are available on request. we provide separate drivers and you guide will not be driving the vehicle.
Elephants feature on this tour please read the following information:

On this tour we can arrange a short crossing by boat across the Mekong to the small Laos settlement od Don Xao. In Don Xao there is a small tourist market where some Laos souvenirs and goods can be found. No visa or passport is required. However a small landing fee of 20 baht is usually collected by Laos authorities.
