Take the scenic road on this two-day package tour to Chiang Rai and the uppermost north of Thailand. This loop tour will take you north of Chiang Mai to see the fascinating Karen Long Neck hill tribe and up the Chinese Community living in Doi Mae Salong. Day two will be spent in the Golden Triangle are taking in all the sights Chiang Rai is famous for.

TOUR DESCRIPTION

Day 1 - Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai

We will collect you from Your Chiang Mai hotel and start the first day by taking the northern route towards Chiang Dao where we will stop to see the Chiang Dao cave system. We will take a special lamp-lit tour into the deep and dark caverns that this cave offers. Will will then visit the multi-tiered Thaton temple which will afford views over the Burma jungle as well as down the Mae Kok river valley towards Chiang Rai. A sumptuous buffet lunch will be taken on the banks of the Mae Kok river before boarding the bus to drive towards the Karen Long Neck village. We will then drive on up into the mountains stopping at an Akha village and then on up to the Chinese community on Doi Mae Salong where the air is cool and you will see the cultivation of tea and visit the mountain top Wat Santikhiri Temple which affords amazing views over the town of Doi Mae Salong and beyond!. We will arrive at your hotel in Chiang Rai in the evening and you will have a chance to freshen up before a visit to Chiang Rai Night Bazaar, this is an excellent spot for some craft shopping as well as a good place to try some local Thai food while enjoying the entertainments.

Day 2 - Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai

After pick up at your Chiang Rai hotel we will make the short drive to Wat Rong Suea Ten (This temple will be immediately recognisable due to it impactful deep sapphire-blue colour. The colour themed visits will continue at our next stop when we will drop into The Black House. (The Black House or Baan Dam is a collection of buildings and structures housing an eclectic collection of art and exhibits. Our next stop will be Wat Chedi Luang in Chiang Saen (An important temple structure in the old Lanna Kingdom of Chiang Saen and then on to The Mekong River, and the famous Golden Triangle area meeting points of Burma, Laos, and Thailand. Here you will have the option to ride a boat on the Mekong River to get a closer look at Myanmar and stop on the Laos Island of Don Sao. Next is the Thai border town of Mae Sai and its bustling border market. On our way back to Chiang Mai, we will stop by the White Temple. (Wat Rong Khun) and Mae Khajan hot springs before transferring you back to your Chiang Mai hotel.

Doi Tung Option - We can visit Mae fah Luang Gardens at Doi Tung on day 2 if required. However to fit this is our busy schedule for the day we will need to make an early departure and be on the road by 07:30 am

Note: You will be required to show your original passport if you want to take the boat ride on the Mekong to the Laos side. Please bring this with you if you want to take this option.

	Group size 3-9 persons: Modern Toyota Commuter minibus - 9 passenger seat format

	Group size 13 + persons: We can either use multiple minibuses or a full sized passenger coach in a 24, 32 or 40 seat format.
Please note during peak holiday periods we often need to contract vehicles to meet the high demand. Occasionally the make and model will be different from that described above but we do ensure all contracted vehicles offer the same comfort and safety level.

Group

Crossing to Laos

On this tour we can arrange a short crossing by boat across the Mekong to the small Laos settlement of Don Xao. In Don Xao there is a small tourist market where some Laos souvenirs and goods can be found. From the beginning of 2015 a passport will be required if you want to take the Mekong boat trip to the Laos island of Don Xao (before a passport was not required) Please bring your passport if you want to do this option. Please also note that no exit or entry visas will be stamped in your passport and if you do cross onto the island of Don Xao your Thai visa will be unaffected. A small landing fee of 20 baht is usually collected by Laos authorities.

Crossing to Burma

On this tour we can arrange a short crossing into Burma from the Thai town of Mae Sai. On the Burmese side there is a bustling border market where you can spend 30-45 minutes. For the Crossing you will require your passport and a Burmese visa which is available at the Burmese immigration post and can be obtained on the day (current price is 500 baht/person). Please note that if you do cross into Burma your current Thai visa will be cancelled. On crossing back to Thailand you will be stamped with a 15 day visa only. Please ensure that 15 days is enough to cover the rest of your holiday plans in Thailand.

Visiting Wat Santikhiri Temple Doi Mae Salong

The road to this temple is extremely steep in places, so with regards to safety we now implement the following procedures when visiting this temple. if you are being transported by car (as opposed to a minibus) then the guide and driver will drive you by vehicle to visit this temple in Doi Mae Salong. If you are being transported by minibus then unfortunately we will not be able to drive you to this temple as we feel the minibus is to bulky to manouver this steep road safely. However for the minibus customers you will have the option to walk up to this temple via the 700+ stepped staircase (please note that a very good level of fitness will be required!) If the road is wet we will not be able to drive to this temple by car or minibus as we feel the road is too slippery in places to do this safely.

Guides

A Tourist Authority of Thailand licensed and English speaking guide will be provided. Other languages are available on request. we provide separate drivers and you guide will not be driving the vehicle.

Visiting Chiang Rai Night Bazaar

If you require a visit to Chiang Rai Night Bazaar for your evening meal and shopping please request this from the guide. The guide and driver will transport you there. However please note that the guide and driver will not be available to take you back to your hotel after your night time shopping and you will be required to make your own way back to you hotel.
