Many people will use Chiang Mai as their
jumping off point on their travels to Laos and
Indochina. The Thai boarder town of Chiang Kong
is only a 5 hour bus ride away. From here it is
a simple immigration process which involves getting
yourself stamped out of Thailand crossing the
Mekong on a long tail boat and then passing through
Lao immigration formalities in the Laos town of
Huay Xai.
From Huay Xai your choice of travel direction
is limited, some will head up towards Luang
Nam Tha while the majority will take one of
the boats plying the Mekong towards Pakbeng
and Luang Prabang. Here at The Travel Hub we
arrange both fast and slow boat packages to
Luang Prabang from Chiang Mai. See the links
below for more information.
If two days on a boat is not for you, we also
arrange direct flights from Chiang Mai to Luang
Prabang and Vientiane with Lao Airlines please
contact us for more information.
Please note that these are budget packages.
You will find the accommodation provided basic
(although clean) and facilities on the boat
will be basic as well. If you are not bothered
by a few minor discomforts then this is a rewarding
waty to get your self to Luang Prabang
