BOAT ALONG THE KOK RIVER
The Kok River Chiang Rai is a highlight of a visit to northern Thailand and well worth the effort as the area lining the river is of exceptional natural beauty. There are a couple of hill tribe villages (Lahu and Karen) along the banks of The Kok River where the boatmen can stop off, they have become a bit touristy but glimpses of hill tribe life are still available. To experience the Kok River you can either charter a longtail boat in Chiang Rai for excursions up river or a Kok River boat trip can form part of you journey to and from Chiang Mai. The once daily scheduled service departs from the pier in Thaton at 12:30pm (in the opposit dierection from Chiang Rai at 10:30). Journey time is around 4 hours. Private charters are available anytime for 2200 Baht and the Kok River boats can sit up to 6 people. The private charter boats tend to be smaller and faster than the regular passenger boat and can cover the distance in 2- 2 half hours.
You can make it to Thaton for the 12:30 departure if you leave early enough from Chiang Mai. You will need to jump on a bus at Chiang Puak Bus Station heading to Thaton. Allow about 3 hours for the bus to Thaton. The Kok River Boat trip is a popular tourist activity these days but still very worthwhile and definitely amore interesting trip than the bus.
